Using evidence and technology since the 1980s to keep women and children healthy.
- As a result of strengthened midwifery services in the 15 communities in sub-districts of Ngasem and Kalitidu, births attended by health care providers increased from 63% to 82%.
- Jhpiego provided technical assistance to adapt the World Health Organization’s manual, Managing Complications in Pregnancy and Childbirth: A Guide for Midwives and Doctors, for use in Indonesia; this adaptation serves as the national standard for maternal and newborn health care.
- Jhpiego launched an SMS (text message) service to provide pregnant women and new mothers with information on reproductive health, pregnancy, childbirth and care for newborns, infants and early toddlers, gaining over 300,000 subscribers from 284 districts.
- Under the Maternal and Child Survival Program, Jhpiego supported the Indonesian Academy of Sciences to successfully convene the first Indonesia Maternal and Newborn Health Evidence Summit, attended by over 150 stakeholder participants, to encourage evidence-based policy-making to address maternal and newborn mortality.

Our Work in Indonesia
AT&T Digital Health Project (InfoBunda)
With support from AT&T, Jhpiego is working with global health experts, the Indonesian Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology and a local digital health social enterprise start-up, PT SijariEMAS Teknologi Inovasi (formed out of a previous Jhpiego project, SMSBunda) to develop and pilot-test health-related SMS content. These text messages, which target pregnant and breastfeeding women, provide evidence-based information on hypertension, tuberculosis and diabetes. Message content focuses on general information about each of the conditions, screening and treatment services, danger signs for pregnant or postpartum women and adherence to treatment.
Rapidly Expand Access to Family Planning in Selected Districts in Indonesia (Pilihanku/myChoice)
Jhpiego is working with BKKBN, Indonesia’s national family planning board, to strengthen its capacity to lead Indonesia’s family planning agenda. This work includes partnering with BKKBN’s leadership, technical managers and supply chain experts on strategy, priority setting and implementation. To help ensure that BKKBN can continue this important work after project completion, Jhpiego is combining formal and informal capacity-strengthening opportunities to: 1) reinforce the provision of postpartum family planning (PPFP), specifically long-acting, reversible contraception; 2) test and train PPFP counselors; 3) cultivate advocates within the obstetrician/gynecologist community in Indonesia to publicly support long-acting, reversible contraception and promote a culture of informed choice and respectful care among clients; 4) ensure that contraceptive supplies are available at the point of service; and 5) certify midwives and other providers in PPFP.
Post-Pregnancy Family Planning Choices: Expanding the Immediate Post-Pregnancy Method Mix in Indonesia and Kenya
With support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Merck for Mothers, Jhpiego is conducting operations research that will advance learning around the provision, uptake and continuation of the full range of contraceptives offered in the immediate post-pregnancy period in the public and private for-profit sectors in Indonesia and Kenya. The primary goal is to generate actionable evidence to be used to improve programmatic activities to address post-pregnancy family planning in the public and private for-profit sectors.
